The Droid X makes an appearance on the Today Show.

The wait is over - DROID X has landed on the Verizon Wireless network. Customers lined up to be among the first to purchase DROID X at the Verizon Wireless Communications Store in Columbia MD, which opened at 12 a.m. July 15, 2010. See video of the first customers to purchase their DROID X smartphones at the special midnight store opening and hear why they think it was worth the wait.”

Unleashed today, the Droid X by Motorola is about as sexy and smooth as a smart phone can be, and it doesn’t hurt the early reviews are mostly raves.

And the cost is cheap for such a smart, smart phone. Right now purchase from Verizon for $199 after $100 mail-in rebate and signing two-year contract.

Droid X belongs at or near the top of the Android list. Verizon has a sterling reputation. Call quality was good. In a week’s worth of testing, I never had a dropped call. Find an iPhone user who can say the same. I hear all the time from folks wondering if and when the iPhone will land on Verizon’s network. I wouldn’t bet on that happening soon.

Meanwhile, Droid X is a standout in its own right.

If you who crave power, speed, flexibility, dropless calls an almost-Imax screen and Verizon’s network (as opposed to Sprint and its similar Evo), the Droid X is a big, beautiful contender for the “best Android phone on the market” crown.

We have the network to deliver the device. The reason people carry devices with them is that they like to make and receive calls.
— Sanjay Jha, chief executive office of Motorola in the New York Times
