Using Mobile Tech to Manage Your Family

There is no single best way to use your smartphone or tablet to manage your family. All of us work in a different way and have different needs. As you look for ways to get a handle on it all, do not give up if one app or method doesn’t work for you. There are countless ways to gain more control over your daily schedule. You will also need to give yourself time to re-learn the way you handle everything, and develop new mobile habits.

One suggestion to get started  is to use a shared calendar. You can use the calendar in Outlook.com, Google, Yahoo or one of the many other online scheduling services. You can create a single calendar for your entire family or you can have multiple calendars and combine them all on one color-coded master schedule.

If you prefer using an organizing and scheduling app that can do more than just keep a calendar-like hold family photos, important files , and other information-then AboutOne and Cozi are two of the more popular choices.

Verizon Wireless Goes Below Ground

Verizon Wireless has entered into a new contract with Transit Wireless to connect to their underground wireless infrastructure to provide service to Verizon customers in 76 NYC subway stations by the end of the year. Pat Devlin, Verizon regional president, says this is a natural extension of Verizon’s reliable network, intended to empower customers and help keep them connected no matter where they are. More details in the below video.

Physical by Smartphone

Companies are developing miniature medical devices that tap the power of smartphones so you could almost get a complete physical — without the paper gown or even a visit to the doctor’s office.

Blood pressure? Just plug the arm cuff into the phone for a quick reading.
Heart OK? Put your fingers in the right spot, and the squiggly rhythm of an EKG appears on the phone’s screen.

Plug in a few more devices and you could have photos of your eardrum and the back of your eye, listen to your heartbeat, chart your lung function, even get a sonogram.

This mobile medicine also might help doctors care for patients in new ways. For more, check out the video below from last month’s TedMed conference in Washington, DC and click through to learn more about how Verizon is using technology to improve healthcare

Verizon Wireless Announces Educational Empowerment Program With Local Boston High Schools

Verizon Wireless announced last week that it’s offering its educational empowerment program at two Boston Public Schools in partnership with Samsung. First introduced locally in 2012 at the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, the Verizon Wireless Education Empowerment Program is being offered again at O’Bryant and has also expanded to include Boston Green Academy. The curriculum focuses on mobile learning, teaching students how to leverage technology in and out of the classroom, preparing them for entering higher education or the workforce.

The program’s signature component is its student application development competition. Ten teams of three students, all selected by the schools’ administration, will work to develop unique app concepts and create marketing plans. Students will attend workshops facilitated by Verizon Wireless team members, covering topics relevant to high school seniors, such as creating resumes and sharpening job interview skills. At the end of the project in May, teams will present their app concepts and marketing plans.

A panel of judges from Verizon Wireless will select the top three finalists of the four-month project and a public online vote will determine first and second place winners. Each member of the winning team will receive a $5,000 scholarship, a new Samsung tablet and Verizon Wireless summer internship opportunities. Each member of the second and third place teams will receive a Samsung tablet.

Verizon Wireless ranked highest among all other national wireless providers in New England, in the J.D. Power and Associates 2013 Wireless Network Quality Performance Study(SM), Volume 1, issued earlier this month. This is the 17th consecutive reporting period that Verizon Wireless ranks highest in the Northeast region.

The study measured network quality among U.S. wireless service providers. More than 27,000 wireless subscribers were surveyed by J.D. Verizon is committed to providing customers with the best possible network experience, empowering them to use smart devices and accessories in faster, more innovative ways.

Celebrating Women Pioneers in Technology for Women’s History Month

Every March, the extraordinary contributions of women throughout history are recognized during Women’s History Month. This year, The National Women’s History Project has selected “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination” as its theme for the celebration.

The imaginations and contributions of women inventors have revolutionized the way people live their everyday lives, including several key innovations that helped shape modern communications.

In the future, women who are developing innovative wireless technology and applications at places like the Verizon Innovation Centers may be celebrated alongside other technology pioneers.

Reblog this post and let us know who you will be celebrating this month.
