Learning on four wheels with Verizon in Worcester, Mass.

Channel 3 for New England Cable News (NECN) toured Verizon’s Mobile Learning Lab at South High School in Worcester, MA where Holy Cross students meet one-on-one with students to help prepare them for college, as well as SATs. It’s all made possible by Verizon Wireless and technology donated by Samsung.

Verizon’s Mobile Learning Lab, which started last year, is a program that combines the use of technology with college mentors, to create a 360-degree comprehensive environment to help the students learn and grow.

The program also partners with Northeastern University and six schools in Boston.

Hampstead Academy Students Win National Mobile App Design Competition

image

A team of eighth grade students from Hampstead Academy in NH are winners of a national competition to develop mobile applications that address a need or problem in their school and community. Their ‘Chow Checker’ app concept is one of 10 winning designs. The app will help people with food allergies avoid foods and ingredients they are allergic to – such as milk, eggs, peanuts and shellfish.

The Verizon Innovative App Challenge was created by the Verizon Foundation in partnership with the Technology Student Association to help boost student engagement and interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab will continue to work with the Hampstead Academy “Chow Checker” team to refine their project. Verizon will provide the teams with professional support and training to help bring their concepts to market. The final products will be made available for download from Google’s Play Store. In addition, Hampstead Academy will receive a $10,000 Verizon Foundation grant to advance STEM education at their school, and each team member will receive the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, courtesy of Samsung Mobile.

More than 470 student teams from across the country submitted concepts for the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. The Hampstead Academy Chow Checker team consists of seven students who will be invited to present their app at the National Technology Student AssociationConference in Orlando, Fla., in late June if they build the app by June 7.

Educational Empowerment Program Kicks Off at McCaskey High School Campus in Lancaster, PA
Verizon Wireless, in conjunction with Samsung, kicked off its educational empowerment program at the School District of Lancaster in Lancaster, Pa. The program focuses on mobile learning and informs a select group of 36 students how to leverage technology in and out of the classroom to assist in learning and preparing for entering higher education or the workforce.

Since the educational empowerment program was created by VZW in 2011, it has been implemented in 15 high schools in the northeastern United States. VZW selected J.P. McCaskey High School and McCaskey East High School in Lancaster to be the first high schools in Pennsylvania to execute the program, largely based on its progressive and diverse student body.

The program’s signature component is its student app competition, which will have 12 teams of three working to develop unique app concepts, and creating marketing plans and commercials around them, using new 10-inch Samsung Galaxy Tablets. Throughout the project, which runs through April, students will attend bi-weekly workshops conducted by VZW team members covering topics such as resume writing, job interview skills, and social media fundamentals.

At the end of the project term, teams will present their app concepts and marketing plans. A panel of judges from VZW will select three finalists and a public online vote will determine first and second place winners. The members of the winning team will receive $2,000 scholarships, new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 tablets and VZW summer internships. Each member of the second place team will also receive a Samsung tablet. Winners will be named at the McCaskey High School Awards Program May 1.
The program fulfills Verizon’s goals of teaching students about technology, opens them to experiences they wouldn’t ordinarily have, and drives home the importance of continuing their education while fostering creativity and collaboration. In the upcoming weeks, the program will launch in schools in Syracuse, N.Y.; Havre de Grace, Md.; Newark, N.J.; Patterson, N.J.; and Boston.

Let’s Talk LTE: College Survival Kit

image

For college students preparing to go back to school, it is essential to have the proper devices to succeed academically, make connections on campus and check in with family.

Apps and services like Skype provide an avenue for parents to spend time with their freshman away from home. Combined with the power of 4G LTE smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S III and DROID INCREDIBLE 4G LTE by HTC, parents can expect better connectivity and more time chatting.

When it comes time for schoolwork, E-reader apps like Kindle for Android have classic literature and new titles available for download, lightening the load to haul around campus and possibly saving a few dollars in the process.

Students with Android tablets, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, can use the QuickOffice Pro HD app to create and edit Microsoft Office documents fast with 4G LTE.

Some mobile hotspots, such as the VerizonJetpack MiFi 4620L, provide 4G LTE connectivity for up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices so you and your dorm pals can have a shareable Wi-Fi signal wherever needed, turning the dining hall or quad into an impromptu study space.

How do you plan on preparing your kids to go away for school? How will you keep in touch? Check back here on Friday for other helpful devices, tips and apps we’ll be sharing with mommy bloggers as everyone prepares for back-to-school.

Verizon Wireless continues the career development program with the Newark Innovation Academy. The program is designed to empower high school students for college and further career success by providing free service on Samsung Galaxy Tabs and using the Edmodo Android app. Plus, one student will receive a $5,000, Verizon Wireless internship and a free Samsung Galaxy Tab. See the video for thoughts from last year’s winner!
