Mobile Learning Lab Helps Students Achieve College Dreams
What Washington, D.C., 12th grade student Ugonna Onyeukwu looked forward to most each week was his second period class on Wednesdays. Unlike other days, when he’d quickly make his way through the busy hallways of Calvin Coolidge High School, transitioning from one advanced course to the next, Wednesday mornings represented something different for Ugonna.
He didn’t have to worry about taking notes during a lecture or lab, completing the required reading, or preparing for an upcoming quiz, midterm or final exam. In fact, he didn’t even have to worry about what grade he would earn because there was no teacher evaluating his performance, per say. But doing well in this course carried even more weight for him than earning an “A” grade because it would determine where and if he got accepted to college.
Ugonna was one of more than 40 students in the District of Columbia to participate in the Mobile Learning Lab special class during the 2012-2013 academic year. And like all his fellow participants at Coolidge, his hard work over the course of nine months paid off. He was accepted at a four-year college, receiving notification from his dream school, Penn State. To read the rest of Ugonna’s story and find out more about Verizon’s Mobile Learning Lab click through.

Stay Safe and Secure When Using Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi connections are a convenient tool, but it’s important for consumers to take steps to protect their devices and personal information, such as online bank accounts or passwords, which can be collected without their knowledge when using these networks.

Connecting to open networks without checking their origins makes it easy for customers to mistake a hacker’s fake hotspot, disguised to resemble a business’s hotspot, for the real thing. Avoid this trap by asking an employee for the name or SSID (Service Set Identifier) of the network or by using a personal mobile hotspot. Do not connect to supposedly “free” networks that ask for a credit card payment or other personal information.

For business travelers especially, public Wi-Fi in airports makes it easy to stay connected to the office while on the road. After using a public network, users should secure their device by setting it to “forget” any networks to which it was previously connected and turn off the device’s Wi-Fi connection.

Also, make sure antivirus and antispyware software is up to date on all of devices, including smartphones. By downloading apps such as Verizon Mobile Security and Lookout, users can help protect themselves from malicious activities.

Channel 3 for New England Cable News (NECN) toured Verizon’s Mobile Learning Lab at South High School in Worcester, MA where Holy Cross students meet one-on-one with students to help prepare them for college, as well as SATs. It’s all made possible by Verizon Wireless and technology donated by Samsung.
Verizon’s Mobile Learning Lab, which started last year, is a program that combines the use of technology with college mentors, to create a 360-degree comprehensive environment to help the students learn and grow.

Get Ready For Earth Day in the Garden with these Apps

How will you celebrate Earth Day this year? A great way to commemorate Earth Day at home is to start a garden. You can use your smartphone with an app or two to help you have a successful gardening adventure.

To help you figure out what you want to plant in your garden and the optimum planting times for your area, check out the Garden Time Planner from Burpee. This app tells you when to sow seeds or transplant and has a large database of plants, where you can learn about their requirements, watch how-to videos and more!

Once you have purchased your tomatoes or petunias, download Landscape & Garden Calculators. This handy garden app tells you how far apart to plant what you’ve purchased, how much fertilizer to use, how much mulch you need, etc.

You want to be sure to stay on top of the watering regimen for a bountiful garden. The Garden Manager Plant Alarm lets you set alarms that remind you to weed, water and care for your garden.

Infographic: Exploring the Mobile Landscape

An infographic from Web-application monitor service New Relic offers some surprising statistics about the mobile landscape. There are more than a billion smartphones in use around the world, and age is no barrier — teens, adults and seniors are all well represented among their users. We use them every day, for every thing from making a hotel reservation, to checking our bank accounts, ordering a pizza and more. And with over 1.5 million apps available in the Apple App Store and Google Play, consumers have an almost unlimited amount of options to choose from.

Verizon Wireless Announces Educational Empowerment Program With Local Boston High Schools

Verizon Wireless announced last week that it’s offering its educational empowerment program at two Boston Public Schools in partnership with Samsung. First introduced locally in 2012 at the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, the Verizon Wireless Education Empowerment Program is being offered again at O’Bryant and has also expanded to include Boston Green Academy. The curriculum focuses on mobile learning, teaching students how to leverage technology in and out of the classroom, preparing them for entering higher education or the workforce.

The program’s signature component is its student application development competition. Ten teams of three students, all selected by the schools’ administration, will work to develop unique app concepts and create marketing plans. Students will attend workshops facilitated by Verizon Wireless team members, covering topics relevant to high school seniors, such as creating resumes and sharpening job interview skills. At the end of the project in May, teams will present their app concepts and marketing plans.

A panel of judges from Verizon Wireless will select the top three finalists of the four-month project and a public online vote will determine first and second place winners. Each member of the winning team will receive a $5,000 scholarship, a new Samsung tablet and Verizon Wireless summer internship opportunities. Each member of the second and third place teams will receive a Samsung tablet.
