The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey’s 9th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Support’s HopeLine from Verizon Wireless

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey hosted its 9th Annual Day of Service. Over 600 students and faculty turned out to volunteer and support various organizations, both on & off campus. Verizon Wireless was on campus to help raise awareness for HopeLine and kick off a year-long partnership with the school. More than 20 students, including the Residence Hall Association, volunteered to help collect no longer used devices around campus and will continue to collect devices on campus throughout the year. Faculty members will begin to incorporate HopeLine Drives into their service plans for the 2013-2014 school year.

Verizon Wireless’ Annual “Packs for Pride” Initiative Spreads Cheer to Local Children Affected By Domestic Violence & Those Impacted By Hurricane Sandy

On Tuesday, December 11, Verizon Wireless Philadelphia Tri-State Region employees donated more than 1,200 backpacks filled with warm winter clothes, personal care items, and toys for children of families affected by domestic violence, as well as Hurricane Sandy. The employee-driven initiative is part of the annual “Packs for Pride” program, made possible through the company’s HopeLine program.

This year’s “Packs for Pride” ceremony featured 11 local organizations at the Verizon Wireless store at the Reading Terminal Headhouse in Philadelphia. Organization representatives gathered with Verizon Wireless Philadelphia Tri-State Region President Mario Turco, Philadelphia Eagles’ Swoop, and Santa Claus to show support for victims of domestic violence and Hurricane Sandy.

Over the past 13 years, more than 7,000 backpacks and thousands of dollars worth of items have been donated through “Packs for Pride.” This year’s participating organizations, including The Salvation Army New Jersey and Congreso will distribute the packs to children in need throughout the region this holiday season.

Domestic Violence Survivors To Start And Expand Small Businesses With Support From Verizon Entrepreneurship Training Program

Nine women, all survivors of domestic abuse, recently graduated from a pilot project in Massachusetts called the Verizon Domestic Violence Entrepreneurship Program. The program provided training to help them start or expand their own small or home-based businesses to achieve greater financial stability and independence.

The Verizon Foundation gave the Center for Women & Enterprise a grant of $75,000 to develop and deliver an entrepreneurship curriculum tailored to meet the needs of these women entrepreneurs who have escaped the cycle of violence. Womanshelter/Compañeras and Safe Passage each received a $10,000 grant from Verizon to help support the program.

Verizon and Sanctuary for Families Launch Entrepreneurship Training Program

Today, Sanctuary for Families, a leading local provider of services for domestic abuse survivors and their families, is launching VETI, the Verizon Entrepreneurship Training Initiative. This program provides select Sanctuary clients with entrepreneurial workshops and computer training to help budding entrepreneurs prepare to launch and operate a small business in the five boroughs. 

The program is funded by a $100,000 grant from Verizon, one of five such grants awarded to workforce development and domestic violence agencies across the state this year to teach small business skills to encourage the creation or expansion of small and home-based businesses by entrepreneurial domestic abuse survivors to help them break the cycle of violence through financial independence. 

“The VETI initiative offers empowerment through hands-on training, helping provide the basis for a secure future,” said John Wyeth, Jr.Assistant Director of Development for Institutional Giving, Sanctuary for Families.
