Verizon Wireless ranked highest among all other national wireless providers in New England, in the J.D. Power and Associates 2013 Wireless Network Quality Performance Study(SM), Volume 1, issued earlier this month. This is the 17th consecutive reporting period that Verizon Wireless ranks highest in the Northeast region.
The study measured network quality among U.S. wireless service providers. More than 27,000 wireless subscribers were surveyed by J.D. Power and Associates between July and December 2012 about their experiences with wireless voice, text messaging and data usage. Based on their responses, Verizon Wireless ranked highest among national wireless companies in five regions, including the Northeast.
In 2012, Verizon Wireless completed $256 million in wireless network enhancements across New England. Since December 2010, when Verizon Wireless launched its 4G LTE network in the Metro Boston area, the company has expanded its 4G LTE footprint throughout all six states of New England.

Skiers and snowboards rejoice! High-speed wireless networks now reach into the mountains and canyons where 57.5 million visits are made on average each year to the nation’s more than 300 winter resorts. This season, Verizon Wireless 4G LTE service was turned on at more than 40 new winter destinations and resorts, including popular spots across the Northeast like Killington, Stowe, Holiday Mountain and Hidden Valley Resort.
Now, skiers and snowboarders can use their 4G LTE devices to find the best days to hit the slopes. Apps such as Ski & Snow Report provide official updates on snow conditions as well as first-hand ski reports from users on the mountain. They can find the best trails for their skill level by downloading trail maps or take advantage of an augmented reality trail map app that uses a phone’s camera to show what runs are ahead. Also, GPS-based downloadable apps like Ski Tracker help map and track runs, capturing everything from speed and distance to altitude and time.

On Sept. 14, Facebook hit a milestone few other Internet properties have reached: the social media site passed one billion users. The company noted that 600 million are mobile users, proof that 2012 was a turning point in the movement to use mobile technology to access the Internet.
The accelerated adoption of smartphones and tablets contributed to the growth of mobile Internet usage. Mobile devices now account for 10 percent of global Internet traffic, doubling that of 2010. Nielsen reports that more than half of mobile subscribers own smartphones and nearly two-thirds of new phones purchased in between April and June 2012 were smartphones. More than half of all cell phones sold by Verizon Wireless were smartphones in the third quarter of 2012. Countries like India and China also saw smartphone adoption and mobile Internet usage skyrocket.
Smartphone and tablet growth can be linked to the growth of 4G LTE networks, which offer the data capacity, speeds and low latency that give users a Web browsing experience comparable to that of a computer. The growth in 4G LTE coverage also means Internet access in more places. Rural areas with limited broadband choices can now access the Web through services like HomeFusion Broadband and mobile hotspots.
As we reflect on the past year, one thing is certain – 2012 was the year of mobile Internet.
