Rebuilding After a Natural Disaster

The People’s Pantry was created by Toms River Regional Schools following the hurricane last year to distribute donations received at shelters to the community. Since then, the pantry has grown into a Hurricane Sandy resource center for community members looking for a helping hand, serving 500 to 800 families each week. To help the pantry meet the needs of the community, Verizon Wireless donated tablets, smartphones, and devices to provide on-site 4G LTE connectivity, and held a Wireless Workshop to train the organization’s staff on how to use the technology.

Verizon Wireless Goes Below Ground

Verizon Wireless has entered into a new contract with Transit Wireless to connect to their underground wireless infrastructure to provide service to Verizon customers in 76 NYC subway stations by the end of the year. Pat Devlin, Verizon regional president, says this is a natural extension of Verizon’s reliable network, intended to empower customers and help keep them connected no matter where they are. Verizon Aiming to Make Your Smartphone Greener

If you’re a Verizon subscriber, all that Facebooking, texting, and tweeting you do on your smartphone is about to get a bit greener. Verizon will be installing fuel cell and solar products at a variety of Verizon buildings, including corporate offices, call centers, data centers and central office.

The Green Energy Project is part of a plan to halve the carbon emissions per terabyte of data streaming through Verizon’s network by 2020.

Verizon currently operates one of the largest fuel cell sites of its kind that helps power an environmentally friendly call-switching center and office building in Garden City, N.Y. Verizon also uses 26 solar-assisted cell sites in remote areas in the western United States to help power the portion of the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless network serving those areas. Companies are developing miniature medical devices that tap the power of smartphones so you could almost get a complete physical — without the paper gown or even a visit to the doctor’s office.

Spring Cleaning Through Smartphone Recycling

According to a survey by mobile security app maker Lookout, 62 percent of respondents said they have at least one unused mobile phone in their household and 11 percent have four or more old phones lying around. For those looking to roll up their sleeves this spring and clear household clutter, recycling these old phones offers a two-for-the-price-of-one benefit.

First, it helps the environment by keeping electronic waste out of landfills. Since 2001, HopeLine from Verizon, for example, has recycled 1.7 million wireless phones and kept more than 260 tons of electronic waste and batteries out of landfills. Second, many of the recycled phones benefit worthwhile charities. HopeLine from Verizon has provided more than $18 million in cash grants have been given to domestic violence organizations donated 151,000 HopeLine phones have been donated for used by victims and survivors. Mobile Learning Lab Helps Students Achieve College Dreams

What Washington, D.C., 12th grade student Ugonna Onyeukwu looked forward to most each week was his second period class on Wednesdays. Unlike other days, when he’d quickly make his way through the busy hallways of Calvin Coolidge High School, transitioning from one advanced course to the next, Wednesday mornings represented something different for Ugonna.

He didn’t have to worry about taking notes during a lecture or lab, completing the required reading, or preparing for an upcoming quiz, midterm or final exam. In fact, he didn’t even have to worry about what grade he would earn because there was no teacher evaluating his performance, per say. But doing well in this course carried even more weight for him than earning an “A” grade because it would determine where and if he got accepted to college.

Ugonna was one of more than 40 students in the District of Columbia to participate in the Mobile Learning Lab special class during the 2012-2013 academic year. And like all his fellow participants at Coolidge, his hard work over the course of nine months paid off. He was accepted at a four-year college, receiving notification from his dream school, Penn State. Earth Day With Verizon Wireless In Hoboken New Jersey

This year Verizon Wireless in the New York Metro region launched TAB, a consumer education program to encourage customers to Think Green, Act Green, And Be Green by going paperless with their billing, requesting e-receipts and recycling old cell phones through the Device Recycling Program or by donating old phones to the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program, which supports domestic violence survivors and their families.

As part of the TAB community outreach program, Verizon Wireless is sponsoring a series of tree plantings throughout New York City and New Jersey. On April 22, Regional President Patrick Devlin and Hoboken Verizon Wireless Store employees joined local school children and representatives from the City of Hoboken for an Earth Day tree planting ceremony which was held in Church Square Park in Hoboken, New Jersey. Verizon Wireless donated a cherry blossom tree to help green the park which had several trees destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.

Devlin also presented a $5,000 HopeLine grant to representatives from WomenRising. This non-profit organization has been in existence for 125 years and is empowering women and residents who are victims of domestic violence from Hoboken and throughout Hudson County. HopeLine collects no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories and turns them into support for domestic violence organizations nationwide. Through HopeLine, Verizon Wireless has donated hundreds of thousands of phones and awarded millions of dollars in cash grants to partner agencies. Stay Safe and Secure When Using Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi connections are a convenient tool, but it’s important for consumers to take steps to protect their devices and personal information, such as online bank accounts or passwords, which can be collected without their knowledge when using these networks.

Connecting to open networks without checking their origins makes it easy for customers to mistake a hacker’s fake hotspot, disguised to resemble a business’s hotspot, for the real thing. Avoid this trap by asking an employee for the name or SSID (Service Set Identifier) of the network or by using a personal mobile hotspot. Do not connect to supposedly “free” networks that ask for a credit card payment or other personal information.

For business travelers especially, public Wi-Fi in airports makes it easy to stay connected to the office while on the road. After using a public network, users should secure their device by setting it to “forget” any networks to which it was previously connected and turn off the device’s Wi-Fi connection.

Also, make sure antivirus and antispyware software is up to date on all of devices, including smartphones. By downloading apps such as Verizon Mobile Security and Lookout, users can help protect themselves from malicious activities.

Learning on four wheels with Verizon in Worcester, Mass.

Channel 3 for New England Cable News (NECN) toured Verizon’s Mobile Learning Lab at South High School in Worcester, MA where Holy Cross students meet one-on-one with students to help prepare them for college, as well as SATs. It’s all made possible by Verizon Wireless and technology donated by Samsung.

Verizon’s Mobile Learning Lab, which started last year, is a program that combines the use of technology with college mentors, to create a 360-degree comprehensive environment to help the students learn and grow.

The program also partners with Northeastern University and six schools in Boston.
